RETRO WEDDING CAKES

Bring me all of the colour on wedding cakes please!! Don’t feel bad if you’re more traditional type. Everyone has their own taste and it’s your wedding so do it your way. But I do miss a bit of colour on a cake. I’ll always be a lover of neutrals. I actually have quite a bland colour pallet. But every now and then, a splash of something that isn’t white or beige, isn’t going to hurt. Let’s start thinking a little out of the box people!

FEATHERS

Now, I’m not saying this will be an all out burlesque feathers head to toe trend. But, I’d love to see some incorporated into a wedding in some way. A few placed in the bouquet or on the cake. Maybe the hem of the dress or a gorgeous feather hair clip! Or guys, perhaps a feather boutonnière instead of flowers? (Do it!) There are no rules when it comes to weddings, so it would be great to see couples start to incorporate things that you don’t get to see too much of.

HANGING DECOR

I AM ALL FOR THIS TREND!!! I’ll start off by saying that unless you’re DIY’ing it yourself (you clever thing!) then it could be costly, depending on what you’re having or if you’re having someone come in to install it for you. But this is something I will never tire of seeing on a wedding day. There’s so many possibilities you could have. Hanging flowers, streamers, balloons, fairy lights or greenery. Don’t be scared to explore the possibilities! Although, check with your venue first! Please make sure that they actually allow something to be installed.

EMBROIDERED DETAILS

This may be something that if for couples with more of a slightly bigger budget, or a really talented family member! Embroidered details need to become more of a thing. It’s so subtle but so cute! It doesn’t even have to be anything huge. Perhaps maybe both of your names along the edge of the veil. Or your initials on the cuffs of the Grooms jacket. It’s something worth thinking about! #justsaying

SUSTAINABILITY

This is a big one that I want to push couples to do. Yes, it’s your wedding day and you want it how you want, but have you thought about what’s going to happen to all of those things that you bought for the day afterwards? All of those centrepieces, can they be used again for something else? Can the flowers that you spent hundreds on be donated to a local nursing home?

Have you looked into companies that rent? I’m not just talking about the suits and chair sashes. There are companies that’ll rent out entire sets of furniture or garden games.

Does your venue use renewable energy? Or locally sourced food? Would it be more economically friendly to have your wedding during a certain season?

Are your vendors doing what they can to help save the planet? I’ll admit there was a time when I did all of my contracts and receipts on paper. No more! All digital now! And my USB boxes are from recycled wood that are delivered to me in the same box that I then deliver to my couples. It’s those small things that can help make a difference.

So maybe have a think about how you can help at your wedding. Even if it’s just something small like using recycled paper for your invitations.

Here’s a link to a great article about how to help make your wedding more sustainable.

GROOMSWEAR

Now I know that the Bride is pretty much the focus on the wedding day. Sorry guys, but you’re really going to have to step up your swag if you want to outdo your partner in a big white dress! So have you thought about ouching the boat out a bit when it comes to what you’re wearing? I get that the traditional suit is a safe option or maybe more your style, but if you have a slightly bolder personality, then express it! Ditch the usual grey or blue attire for a slightly stronger colour. Or maybe experiment with a velvet jacket instead? Or, my favourite, a mismatched suit. Go big with a killer jacket!

Have you thought about the shirt? It doesn’t always have to be a white shirt you know? There are soooooo many options!!! Seriously, go on Pinterest and in the search bar, type “Alternative Groomswear”. You will not be disappointed!!

WEDDING DRESSES

I’m not just talking just dresses are going to be a trend. I talking a bit of sparkle! This is the year for it. I can feel it!! I love it when brides add something a little different to their dresses! And it still look so damn classy. And, not to be biased, but that sparkle at nighttime with a couple of flashes around you to light you up. Honey, you’re going to look like someone about to get their own star on the Walk of Fame! Trust me, when you go dress shopping, ask if they have any dresses with some sparkle. There’s no harm in trying it on!

MISMATCHED BRIDESMAID DRESSES

This is one that I have talked about before in a previous blog. We need to start having more mismatched Bridesmaids dresses! And I won’t lie, it really help a photographer out when everyone’s in a different dress. When you all wear the same thing, it can make it harder to tell you apart!

So get creative! If you’re willing to do this for your wedding, ask your Bridesmaids if they’d like to pick their own dresses. Or if you want the same colour, ask if they’d feel more comfortable in a certain style. Some like it tight, some loose. Everyone’s different! I’ve even seen some Bridesmaids wear different textures as well.

I feel like this year, the girls are opening their minds to the idea that the bridal party don’t all have to look the same. It’s okay to mix it up a bit.

COCKTAIL HOUR

Maybe more of a thing in America, but I’d love for this trend to make it big over here in the UK. Cocktail hour!! Those two magical words! And it’s not just at the Slug & Lettuce where you have to hear it. I know that after the ceremony there’s always a drinks reception, and it’s usually Prosecco or Pims that’s being served. But does everyone at your wedding like those options? I know that they are the standard at most venues, but have you asked them if they can do a speciality drink on the day? Maybe the two of you have a cocktail that you love and want to share with your friends and family. It really does add that personal touch to the day. You can literally make it the cocktail of the day!

HONEYMOON FUNDS

This is a trend that for me, really isn’t a trend anymore. It’s becoming more of an expectation or regularity.

There’s absolutely no shame in asking for money gifts on your wedding day. Actually, as someone who’s been a guest at many weddings, I actually prefer shoving a couple of notes inside a card! Couples tend to already be living together before they get married now, so gone are the days of buying a toaster or some cute towels!!

Weddings are expensive! Depending on what you’re having on the day obviously. So as a guest, I feel there’s no reason why you can’t help the happy couple with a contribution towards a lovely holiday! So put that message on the invite, loud and proud guys!!
